N34 · NO WAY AROUND
THE N34
PARENT–ATHLETE
AGREEMENT
Clear expectations. Shared accountability. Earned privileges.
“I thought the agreement was going to hold my kid accountable. I didn't expect how much it would hold me accountable too.”
WHERE IT STARTED
BEFORE LAST SEASON, WE WROTE IT DOWN.
Before the season started, we sat down together and created a written agreement. Not a lecture. Not a list of rules. A real document — signed by both of us — that covered what we each expected from the other.
It covered responsibilities at home, athletic preparation, effort, attitude, equipment care, family support, earned privileges, and when we'd review it together.
The agreement became useful because expectations were written down, reviewed, and shared. There was no ambiguity. No moving the goalposts. No "I didn't know that was the rule."
Noah had responsibilities. So did I.
That's the part most parent tools miss. This one doesn't.
THE AGREEMENT
BOTH SIDES SIGN IT.
ATHLETE COMMITS TO
- —Strong effort — every practice, every game
- —Preparation before showing up
- —Taking care of equipment
- —Responding well to mistakes
- —Home responsibilities
- —Honesty with coaches and parents
- —Being a good teammate
PARENT COMMITS TO
- —Getting the athlete where they need to be
- —Providing agreed-upon training opportunities
- —Not moving the goalposts after expectations are set
- —Recognizing effort separately from performance
- —Keeping emotions under control after games
- —Reviewing the agreement when promised
- —Delivering earned privileges
- —Listening before lecturing
- —Admitting when the parent misses the standard
- —Being clear, consistent, and fair
WHY IT WORKS
WRITTEN DOWN MEANS REAL.
Reduces ambiguity and nagging
When expectations are written and agreed on, there's nothing to argue about. Both sides know what was said.
Effort and attitude over stats
The agreement is built around what a kid can control — how hard they work, how they respond, how they show up.
Reviewed, not weaponized
The agreement gets revisited and adjusted. It's not a punishment document. It's a living standard.
Privileges are earned
Follow-through gets rewarded. That's the deal. Both sides know it going in.
The parent is accountable too
This is the part that changes things. When a parent signs it, the standard applies to them as well.
